Hair, Skin Glowing Tips...Monsoon Care Tips

Beauty tips: Beat the monsoon blues!

Come monsoons and you are sure to experience mixed feelings! On one hand there is mischief, playfulness, fun, romance, while on the other, there is misery, gloominess, filthiness and irritation.

In fact, getting caught in rain showers unprotected can convert even the most perfect makeover into a complete disaster. Constant care is therefore required to keep your hair lustrous and your skin glowing.

We asked Dr Mukesh Batra, Founder and CMD of Dr Batras' Positive Health Clinic, to give you a few homeopathic to help you to sail through those bleak-and-dreary-hair days:

1. Skin problems:

Have you noticed how during the rains, your skin tends to wrinkle up, shrink, and develop acne? Here are a few simple tips to get around all these problems.

What you need:

1. Taking 2 tablets of Silicea 6X, a homeopathic remedy, twice daily has been found to be useful in treating acne.

2. Chrysarobic acid 6C, 5 pills twice daily can help to treat generalised fungal infections.

3. Mercurius Sol 30C, 5 pills twice daily is recommended for fungal infection in the groins.

Fungal infections of the nails and in between the toes are common in the monsoons; so keeping them clean is important. Avoid heavy makeup. Preferably use water-resistant products.

2. Hair problem

Dandruff and hair fall are quite common this season. But a little care everyday could keep hair-raising troubles at bay!

To avoid a flat, damp or frizzy look, conditioning and neatly tying a pony tail is a favourable solution as the hair tangles easily in the wet season.

Get a therapeutic and rejuvenating hair massage done to help revitalise those damp roots.

Use a scarf to protect your hair from winds and adverse weather conditions.

Oiling and washing your hair at least thrice a week with lukewarm water is advisable. Use only mild shampoos or herbal-based shampoos rather than lathering shampoos as the latter tend to dry and roughen your hair and preferably dry your hair with thin towels.

Avoid getting wet as high humidity can damage your hair and lead to hair fall. If you get drenched in the rain, wash your hair immediately with a mild shampoo and follow it up by a conditioner to keep the scalp free of germs. If you tend to have dandruff and fungal infections, use an antidandruff shampoo.

Allow your hair to dry naturally. If you must use a hair dryer, hold it 6-8 inches away from the scalp. Do not use styling gels and brush your hair with a wide toothed comb.

What you need:

1. Homeopathic medicine Calcarea Sulph 6X can be taken for scaly and dry dandruff.

2. Kali Sulph 6X can help to treat sticky yellow dandruff. If the dandruff persists in spite of using an antidandruff shampoo and the indicated medicines, consult a doctor.

Know more about hair health

Dr Raksha of Amazing Herbal Remedies, clarifies some very basic doubts about hair fall and hair
Hair care related issues

What is the difference between hair loss and balding ?
Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is a term used for progressive hair thinning and alopecia areata, which is spot baldness or loss of hair from certain areas of the scalp, also known as patchy baldness. Baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia, on the other hand, is a condition wherein a person loses hair on scalp in a typical sequence and pattern. There is male pattern baldness as well as female pattern baldness. Hair loss usually starts at the temples and/or on the crown of the head. Thinning of hair over a number of years may lead to total baldness.

Do men bald more than women?
Baldness affects both men and women, though it is much more prevalent in men. By the age of 25, 25 per cent of men have lost some of their hair. The reason behind this could be attributed to a chemical called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which builds up around the hair follicle and eventually kills both the follicle and the hair. While women don’t necessarily lose all of their hair like men, they often get thinning hair. It could be due to hormonal imbalances, but can also be a result of pregnancy, lack of nutrients in the body, or even certain birth control and hormone medications.

What are the main causes of baldness?
There are many causes for baldness - alopecia areata, syphilis, traction alopecia, seborrhoeic dermatitis, post-febrile condition, debility and emaciation, during lactation, endocrine disorders, stress and strains, certain drugs like hydration, etc, hereditary factors, injury, burns, leprosy and X-rays burns, etc.

Rejuvenate your skin, the healthy way

More than just a beauty treatment
Everyone wants to look good. And more so, with beauty sessions like 'skin rejuvenation' just a doorstep away, every modern woman desires Skin Rejuvenation flawless skin.

However, many women often mistake skin rejuvenation to be just like any other beauty treatment, thus failing to understand the importance of medical expertise that comes side by side with the beauty regime.

It's quintessential to realise that skin rejuvenation is not all about getting an expensive facial, letting your tired nerves relax and going back home with a fresh feeling. There's a lot more.

A skin refreshing session may imply just a simple glow for some and removing scars and spots for others, but before anything is done on the skin, the root cause of one's skin problems need to be figured out first.

Skin treatments will only be needed in case of any deficiency and lack of nutritional value. Unless medically examined for factors like skin type, colour complexion, sensitivities, reasons behind ill-health and further requirements, a skin rejuvenation session can do more harm than good.

Dr. Anita Sharma, consultant dermatologist, Clinic Dermatech, explains: "As we age, our skin loses out its original lucidity and elasticity as tissues start getting degenerated. In order to stimulate these elastic tissues, there has to be a treatment, but in accordance to our skin type as it may cause damage."

So for all the pretty women out there, wanting to look gorgeous, it's time you know what exactly your skin wants and accordingly decide an apt way to keep it healthy.

Besides basic skin related factors, your doctor also needs to work on secondary factors like the hours of sleep and stress undertaken before suggesting any skin treatment. This ultimately adds a medical angle to the conventional meaning of skin rejuvenation.

Agrees Dr. Atul Hasija, dermatologist, Clinic Dermatech, "Through skin rejuvenation treatments, we can treat problems like tanning, oiliness, acne and scars. But in the absence of a proper understanding with the doctor of the patient's skin type and what products would suit best; the chances of side-effects may rise."

Unlike customary touch-and-heal-therapies, the new technologies used for skin rejuvenation not only promise a glowing skin, but also ensure a healthy skin texture, removal of the dead skin. Besides, it's a good way to relax a fatigued mind and body.

Under this treatment, all flawed and dead skin is removed, along with pigments. "Appropriate creams and ointments are applied on skin that works with defined techniques to ensure quick results in lesser time," informs Dr. Hasija.

HOME REMEDIES For Whitening Teeth

HOME REMEDIES

Finally, there are the various and rather dubious home remedies for whitening teeth:

Brushing with lemon juice.

Don't. Lemon juice can lighten the color of your teeth, but only at the expense of your teeth. The juice is acidic. It causes calcium loss. This whitens teeth because calcium gives teeth some of their off-white color. It also means affected teeth are less resistant to decay and cavities. Your teeth might be brighter, but you could have fewer of them.

Brushing with mashed-up strawberries.

Another ill-advised idea. The notion here is that the strawberries' fibrous pulp and seeds act as scrubbers, scraping away nasty plaque and germs. But the fruit's sugars and acids do more harm than good, requiring that you immediately and thoroughly brush with a fluoride toothpaste.

Brushing with baking soda.

This doesn't really whiten teeth — there's no bleaching action — but baking soda can help remove plaque and make teeth shiny because it's abrasive. Use too much baking soda too often, however, and you may damage the enamel of your teeth.

Brushing with wood ash.

Wood ash (presumably retrieved from your fireplace) does whiten teeth because it contains potassium hydroxide, otherwise known as lye. But the ash has to come from a hardwood, such as oak, maple or walnut. Ash from softwoods like pine don't contain enough potassium hydroxide to be effective.

Again, be careful. Wood ash may contain other chemicals and compounds you wouldn't want to put in your mouth. Also there's no way to know how much potassium hydroxide you're actually getting in a dab of wood ash; too much too often can significantly damage your teeth.

Sunglasses Not Only Look Fashionable

How to Choose Sunglasses

Sunglasses not only look fashionable, but they also help protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.

1. Check labels to make sure the sunglasses provide 100 percent UVA and UVB protection.

2. Look for sunglasses that filter out at least some blue light, which can damage the retina and lead to macular degeneration (vision loss from degeneration in parts of the eye). To make sure, try wearing them outside; a blue sky should appear gray with these on. Also ask about polarization, a type of filtering that helps reduce glare.

3. Choose a lens color based on your preferences and comfort level. Gray doesn't affect color perception; orange-brown lenses are a good choice for those with macular degeneration, since they filter out UV and blue light rays for maximum retinal protection; green lenses distort color less than other shades, such as red or yellow.

4. Opt for lightweight, plastic, shatterproof sunglasses if you're going to be wearing them when playing sports.

5. Purchase sun goggles for total protection of your eyes. These cover a large area and include side shields. As an added bonus, they also fit over prescription glasses.

Dry Skin and Itching Home Treatment

Home treatment suggestions may help make you comfortable if you have dry skin.

* For very dry hands, try this for a night: Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly, and wear thin cotton gloves to bed. (Dry feet may benefit from similar treatment.)
* If dry, brittle nails are a problem, use lotion on your nails as well.

Avoid scratching, which damages the skin. If itching is a problem, try the following:

* Keep the itchy area well moisturized. Dry skin may make itching worse.
* Try an oatmeal bath to help relieve itching.
o Wrap 1 cup of oatmeal in a cotton cloth and boil as you would to cook it. Use this as a sponge and bathe in tepid water without soap.
o You may also try a commercial product, such as Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal bath.
* Try a nonprescription 1% hydrocortisone cream for small itchy areas.
o Use the cream very sparingly on the face or genitals.
o If itching is severe, your doctor may prescribe a stronger cream.
* Try a nonprescription oral antihistamine, such as Claritin, Chlor-Trimeton, or Benadryl.
* Cut your nails short or wear gloves at night to prevent scratching.
* Wear cotton or silk clothing. Avoid wool and acrylic fabrics next to your skin.

Your Hair Fall a lot? Don't Worry

Does your hair fall a lot? Don't worry, you're not alone. Millions of people from all around the world suffer from dry, brittle and weak hair. Some of the possible reasons for falling hair are:

* Tension
* Too much work
* Illness
* Poor diet
* Over-exposure to the sun
* Perming
* Amateur bleaching
* Too frequent and inexpert use of tints, rinses or other colourants

Here is what you can do to prevent hair fall

* Shampoo regularly. Remember, a CLEAN scalp is a HEALTHY SCALP.

* Brahmi amla oil also promotes hair growth.

* A high protein diet with plenty of fruits, green vegetables and dairy products is a must.

* Drink 10-12 glass of water everyday.

* Use a very mild shampoo and condition your hair at least twice a week. When you do, make sure you rinse out the conditioner thoroughly, otherwise residue build-up will cause your hair to look limp and dull.

* Know your vitamins! IRON is important for healthy hair and brittle, limp hair indicates an iron deficiency. Spinach has a good iron content, so gulp it down!

* ZINC helps prevent hair loss and greying. Eat adequate zinc rich foods. Overweight people tend to have zinc deficiency, which is inversely related to the body mass index. Thus if you are overweight and if your hair falls too much, you may want to increase your intake of zinc containing foods. Recipes containing stone ground, wholegrain flour are rich in zinc.

* A shortfall in VITAMIN B may cause dandruff, falling hair, loss of colour and could encourage grey hair. So B group Vitamins are essential for gloss, colour and thickness.

* VITAMIN C ensures the health of capillaries supplying blood to hair follicles. Make sure your diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and veggies.

* VITAMIN E encourages hair growth. Switch from refined flours to wholemeal and wheatgerm, eggs, vegetable oil.

* COPPER stops hair from falling. Studies show that the copper content in the blood serum of people with falling hair is less than normal. Different types of alopecia (falling hair) are seen to have a deficiency of this important trace element. Include small quantities of nuts, especially cashews and peanuts, seeds, whole milk and beans in your diet as these contain minute but important amounts of copper.

Shampoos, Soaps can cause Eczema

Many shampoos, skin conditioners and soaps contain an ingredient that can cause eczema, warn Swedish scientists.

A thesis presented at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden found that over 5 percent of those who underwent patch testing were allergic to the air oxidized form of the fragrance ingredient linalool.

Eczema can cause a lot of different skin conditions, including rashes, swelling, itching and cracking.

"I would suspect that about 2 percent of the complete population of Sweden are allergic to air oxidized linalool. That may not sound very much, but it is serious since linalool is so widely used as a fragrance ingredient. Linalool is found in 60-80 percent of the perfumed hygiene products, washing up liquids and household cleaning agents that can be bought in the nearest supermarket, and it can be difficult for people who are allergic to avoid these products", says dermatologist
Johanna Brared Christensson, author of the thesis.

Nickel is by far the most common substance that causes eczema, but the thesis shows that oxidized linalool occupies third place in the list, after nickel and cobalt.

In the study, oxidized linalool was added at patch testing for more than 3,000 patients who wanted to find out what was causing their eczema. Between 5 percent and 7 percent proved to be allergic to the oxidized form of the fragrance ingredient.

"Linalool is present in many products around us, and this is probably the reason that contact allergy to this material is so common. Some people can shower with shower cream that contains linalool but never develop contact allergy, but we know that the risk increases as the exposure to t! he substance increases", says Johanna.

Linalool is a fragrance ingredient found naturally in lavender, mint, and other plants. Linalool breaks down when it comes into contact with oxygen, it becomes oxidized and can cause allergy. Manufacturers do include other substances in the products to delay this oxidation process, but allergenic substances can still be formed from linalool when it is stored.

"One way of trying to minimise exposure to oxidized linalool is to avoid buying large packs of soap and shower cream, and always to replace the top after using a bottle", says Johanna.

Why women love make-up

Ever wondered why women love make-up? Well, the answer lies in their brain, say Japanese scientists, who found that women anticipate a rush of Ever wondered why women love make-up? Well, the answer lies in their brain. anticipation and optimism as they prepare to apply make-up.

The findings are based on two years of research by cosmetics giant Kanebo.

The company’s ‘Cosmetics, Beauty and Brain Science’ project determined that there are distinct cognitive activities involved in a woman’s perception of her face with and without make-up.

The researchers used a brain scanner and monitored activity in the caudate nucleus of the brain and found that when a woman sees her own face without make-up, she anticipates how she will eventually appear to others and a ‘reward system’ is activated, releasing dopamine to give sensations of pleasure.

"We know from previous research that when this area of the brain is activated we can derive pleasure from certain activities," the Telegraph quoted Keishi Saruwatari, of Kanebo’s laboratories, as saying.

"We interpret that as meaning that when a woman looks at her face she is imagining how she will look when she has applied her make-up.

"There is a mixture of expectation, encouragement and ambition," he said. "Make-up contributes to building relationships with others and feelings of pleasure in women," Saruwatari added.
